Google’s G1 Phone

Google is about to debut its new Mobile OS called “Android” It will be released exclusively on T-Mobile’s Network and will run on HTC hardware. The HTC device is called G1, I’m assuming they called it that simply because this is Google’s first phone. Easy enough.

Will it be a competitor to the iPhone ? The simple answer is no. While it does have some similarities to the iPhone such as a touch screen, it lacks the multimedia power that the iPhone was built around. The phone doesn’t offer sophisticated features or any ground breaking technology.

The G1 also does not offer any support for enterprise email such as blackberry or exchange. There is also no way to sync your outlook to the device either. It seems as though Google is trying to push Gmail instead of compatibility with industry standard email applications.

So what is so cool about it ? I’m still scratching my head, but from what I’ve read it performs well (mostly due to lightweight apps) and it is open source. If you dont like the contacts list you can simply code your own. In my opinion the G1 is still a work in progress.
